Standardized scores

Standardized scores use the standard deviation of individual judges’ scores to measure against their own average. This equalizes the weights between judges with a low score spread and those with a high score spread.

Standardized Score = Judge’s Raw Score − Judge’s Average Raw Score sum of ( each score − average score )2 total scores

Every score in that square root is one of the scores that judge gave. 0 is exactly average for that judge; +1 is one standard deviation above, better than roughly five entries in six; −1 is one below.

Worked example

Suppose a judge scored five entries: 52, 58, 60, 64 and 66.

Their average

52 + 58 + 60 + 64 + 665 = 60

Their standard deviation

Each score’s distance from 60, squared:

( 52 − 60 )2 = 64    ( 58 − 60 )2 = 4    ( 60 − 60 )2 = 0
( 64 − 60 )2 = 16    ( 66 − 60 )2 = 36
64 + 4 + 0 + 16 + 365 = 24 24 = 4.90

One entry’s standardized score

Take the entry they scored 66:

Standardized Score = 66 − 604.90 = 64.90 = 1.22

That entry sat 1.22 standard deviations above this judge’s average.
